Session Overview

This session will provide a first contact with fractions and why they are useful

  • Agility with fractions in different operations
  • Understanding the concepts of numerator and denominator
  • Complete introduction to Polyup (6th to 8th Grade)
    • Knowing how to use numbers (circular blocks) and operations (square blocks)
    • Knowing how to manage stacks
  • Knowledge of basic operations: addition, subtraction, division and multiplication

Getting students ready

  1. Students should go to

  • They should click on the play button to access the Polyup environment.
  • If they have an account, they can sign in with their username or email, if not, they should create a student account.
  • Students should click on Poly at the bottom and enter the following code: MY7UURW

Starting the session

  1. The teacher should beam the presentation so that all students can see
  2. The teacher could give a explain the formalism of writing numbers as fractions using the first chip to illustrate how useful they are
  3. The teacher should solve the first chip with the students
  4. Students should open the second chip and try to find the solution after seeing the presentation
    1. The teacher should show the solution in the board after 5 min approximately.
  5. Students should open the third chip and try to find the solution.
    1. The teacher should show the solution in the board after 5 min approximately.
  6. The rest of the chips should be solved by the students on their own, either in class or at home.
